In this article, we’re sharing how we use Castile soap—a gentle, natural cleaner—to safely clean these suede interiors without damaging their soft texture or color, while restoring their natural feel and luxuriousness.
Why Use Castile Soap on Suede?
The suede interiors in many of the preloved vintage luxury bags we restore are made from the underside of leather, giving them that signature velvety texture. While undeniably beautiful, suede is also delicate and porous, meaning it readily absorbs oils, dust, and dirt over time.
Traditional suede cleaners can be harsh, and chemical-based products may darken or damage the material. Other methods—like using a suede brush or eraser—can be somewhat effective, but they often leave residue behind, require a lot of elbow grease, and don’t offer the kind of deep clean we prefer for fully restoring suede interiors.
That’s why we’ve turned to gentler, safer alternatives—like Castile soap, a plant-based, non-toxic soap that’s incredibly mild and safe for delicate materials.

How to Clean Suede Bag Interiors with Castile Soap: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Start with a Dry Brush
Before introducing any moisture, always begin by dry brushing the suede. This helps lift the nap (the tiny raised fibers that give suede its texture) and removes loose surface dirt.

A multi-use suede brush with both nylon and brass bristles.

Use light pressure, brushing in one direction only to avoid flattening the fibers or causing uneven wear.
Once the entire interior has been brushed, use a handheld cordless vacuum to gently remove any loosened debris.

2. Mix a Mild Castile Soap Solution
Next, prepare your gentle cleaning solution.
How to Mix It:
Add just a few drops of unscented, pure Castile soap (we use Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Soap) into up to 1 cup of lukewarm water.
Mix gently until it forms a light, slightly soapy solution—less is more here! You don’t want a bubbly or heavily concentrated mixture, just enough to clean without leaving residue.
3. Clean in Circular Motions—Gently and Thoroughly
Now that your solution is ready, it’s time to clean—gently.
The Process:
Dampen a horsehair dauber brush with your Castile soap solution.

Apply the solution to the suede in small circular motions, using light pressure. Be sure to move the fibers in various directions to clean thoroughly without flattening the nap.
Avoid pressing too hard or rubbing in one direction, as this can damage the delicate fibers.
Work one panel at a time. Once a panel is complete, use a microfiber towel dampened with lukewarm water to gently wipe away any remaining soap residue. Then move on to the next section.

4. Let the Suede Air Dry Naturally

This step serves two important functions:
The towels absorb excess moisture as the bag air dries naturally.
They also help reshape the bag—a crucial part of restoring preloved vintage luxury bags that may have been flattened or lost their structure over time.
Place the bag in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, and allow it to dry for 24 hours. After that, remove the towels and restuff the bag with clean, dry ones, then continue letting it air dry for another 24 to 48 hours.
⚠️ Important: Suede should never be force-dried with a hairdryer, heater, or placed in the sun. This can harden or shrink the delicate material.
5. Brush Again to Restore Texture
Once the suede is fully dry, use your suede brush again to gently lift the nap and bring back that soft, plush feel.
You’ll be amazed at how refreshed and vibrant the interior looks and feels after this step. This gentle, low-impact method not only revives the texture but also restores that beautiful, natural suede smell—a subtle but satisfying sign that the material is clean and healthy again.
Example from Our Work
We used this exact Castile soap method on a Vintage Dooney & Bourke Carrier Bag with a suede interior that showed signs of surface dirt, matting, and light staining.
After dry brushing and carefully cleaning with the diluted Castile soap solution, the interior looked noticeably fresher. The nap was revived, and the suede retained its softness—with no darkening or water spots.
Tips for Success
Test first: Always test your Castile soap mixture on a small, hidden part of the suede interior before applying it more broadly.
Don’t over-wet: Use as little moisture as possible.
Avoid scented versions: Stick to unscented or baby mild Castile soap to avoid residues or fragrance transfer.
