How to Gently Clean & Condition Vintage Italian Florentine Leather

Why Italian Florentine Leather Deserves Special Care

Italian Florentine leather is known for its smooth, polished finish and durable yet delicate surface. It is often vegetable-tanned using traditional methods that rely on natural tannins extracted from plants. This vegetable tanning process produces leather that is rich in color and uniquely capable of developing a beautiful patina over time—a natural aging process that enhances the leather’s character and charm.

Because of this traditional tanning and dyeing process, Italian Florentine leather can be sensitive to harsh chemicals and excess moisture, which may dull its natural sheen or cause drying and cracking if improperly treated.

Our approach uses gentle, natural products and careful techniques to clean and restore the leather’s integrity and beauty, while preserving and maintaining its finish and its timeless patina.

Step 1: Inspect and Dust the Leather

Before cleaning, take time to carefully inspect your bag for stains, discoloration, or areas of wear. Use a soft, dry microfiber towel to gently dust away any surface dirt or debris. This prevents grit from being rubbed into the leather during cleaning and protects the finish.

Step 2: Prepare a Mild Cleaning Solution

We use a gentle cleaner, properly diluted and applied with a horsehair dauber brush. Our go-to cleaner is unscented Castile soap, a plant-based, non-toxic soap that’s incredibly mild and safe for most leather surfaces when used correctly.

Castile soap works beautifully on multiple types of leather when used sparingly and appropriately. It helps lift dirt and grime without drying the material or altering its finish.

Important: Always use unscented, pure Castile soap—fragrances and added oils can leave behind residue or cause discoloration. This is the Castile soap we use and recommend: https://amzn.to/4m9hYhW

How to Prepare:

  • Mix a couple of drops of unscented Castile soap into 1 cup of lukewarm water.

  • Stir gently until the solution is lightly soapy—avoid bubbles or foam.

Step 3: Apply Cleaner

Dampen a horsehair dauber brush with the cleaning solution and apply it to the leather in small circular motions, using gentle pressure. Work one panel at a time. After thoroughly cleaning a panel, use a dry microfiber towel to wipe away excess product and debris, then move on to the next panel.

Step 4: Let the Leather Air Dry Naturally

After cleaning, allow the leather to air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid force-drying methods such as hair dryers or heaters, which can cause cracking or shrinkage.

Step 5: Condition the Leather Exterior

Once the leather is clean, you’ll want to ensure it stays moisturized and pliable. To do this, we use Apple Leather Conditioner, applying it with our gloved hands so we can really work it into the leather

Leather conditioner is essential for preventing cracking and maintaining suppleness, especially on vintage leather bags.

Step 6: Buff Out the Bag

Once the leather is cleaned and conditioned, we use a clean microfiber towel to buff the entire exterior. This simple step brings the look and feel of the leather back to life.

Step 7: Deep Condition the Leather Exterior

Once the leather is re-moisturized, we deep condition it to enhance the natural patina and help address any marks, discoloration, or scratches that Florentine leather is notorious for.

To do this, we apply Blackrock Leather ‘N’ Rich cleaner and conditioner to the entire bag using gloved hands.

This product is extremely emollient, and a little goes a long way—so be sure to use it sparingly and work it thoroughly into the leather, paying extra attention to problem areas.

After the bag is treated, we allow the leather to rest for 48 hours.

Step 8: Buff Out the Bag a Second Time

With the leather deep conditioned, we use a horsehair brush to buff the entire exterior to a lustrous sheen.

This additional step helps soften harsher scratches, remove lighter marks, and fade discoloration, giving the bag a renewed glow and smooth finish.

After treatment, the leather looked refreshed, vibrant, and supple, with its signature rich patina beautifully restored—all without any damage or residue.

Tips for Success

  • Always test cleaning and conditioning products on a hidden area first.

  • Use minimal moisture during cleaning to avoid oversaturating the leather.

  • Choose unscented, natural products whenever possible to prevent residue buildup.

Condition regularly, but avoid over-conditioning, which can make the leather sticky or attract dirt.
